looking for music recommendations, specifically with lyrics that deal with suicidal thoughts, depression, letting things go, but sound mostly upbeat or have a tinge of optimism or a commitment to keep living through that shit. Not really looking for romantic love songs or over-the-top optimism. I have a playlist with "I WANNA BE HERE", by E^ST, "Heavy" by Birdtalker, "Story to Tell" by Ambar Lucid, "I Wanna Get Better" by the Bleachers. Not super connected. Well, one connection: When I blasted these through my headphone, it was generally midnight and I was walking along a canal by myself in a new city. I was feeling really alone, which was liberating and isolating. I felt really exposed, like all of the highs and lows of the world left impressions on my skin when my arms were already covered in goosebumps. I didn't want to suffer anymore, but I still saw things that were really wonderful. I desperately wanted to get better, and wanted to... want to be alive :-) So many contradictions! I'll be surprised if anyone reads, but if you do, thank you. Drop any songs that fit this vibe, or that might resonate similarly w you if you feel inclined. <3 I ain't picky, and even if the vibe resonates, lemme know.
2017.07.09 21:07 PerdinBands playing in Vancouver from July 10th to July 16th
Hey /Vancouver, It’s time for the new weekly concert listings, giving you the information you need this week on who is playing, where they’re playing, and why you should see them. The point of this thread is to help spread the music scene in Vancouver, find concert buddies, or hype up your concerts for the week. As always I may’ve missed a few bands but generally don’t include crappy cover bands. If I did miss a legitimate touring band please comment below. If you want to know who is playing today, look at last week’s thread. Perdin’s Picks Streetweight:The Ruffled Feathers @ Burnaby Civic Square – Free
Ruffled Feathers were also Contenders for the Pubweight title for this week, but I decided to give them the Streetweight title since they have a free show. Their show on Saturday is also a great deal as well though for $12.
I’m excited for Sarah Jickling’s new music. It seems like a lot of her new music is dealing with her being bi-polar which is interesting. Pick of the week for Pubweight because I feel like her weird brand of pop music is dark and uplifting. There are a lot of contenders like Ruffled Feathers and Nite Jewel, but if I was going to a show this week that’s under $15, it’ll be this one.
Vancouver staple. I will also suggest going to their FREE Thursday Show which will be musicians covering famous Canadian songs. Since I was giving Folk Festival the Arenaweight title, I couldn’t also give them the Streetweight one.
Indie rock/low-fi rock band the She-Devils are touring with other indie bands Ablebody and Beach Fossils. These are easy listening rock tunes for those long summer nights or dancing alone in your bedroom at 2am. It’ll be a good show.
The Fox Cabaret is having a night of chillwave/electronica as Nite Jewel takes the stage. With her is Harriet Brown who is a funk sound kind of guy. I really like Nite Jewel’s work, especially with the talented Julia Holter.
Pretty much new age country. On one side you have Birdtalker that is more of a folky country alternative band and then you have Austin Manuel who is trying to blend electronica/country together which sounds odd and may not compliment what you expect from a country show.
Vancouver punk rock bands! They all sound low-fi, low production valleys and exactly what you expect from bandcamp. But they’re local, they have passion, and they want to play. Link goes to the facebook event.
Foonyap is known for her powerful voice, her vocals are raw and powerful. An Ant and an Atom is mainly instrumental sounds, his earlier releases is harsh on the ears reminding me of old industrial music in the 80’s without the electronic beats. Echuta is a post-punk/folk punk band from Vancouver. Link goes to the FB event page.
The Avalanches recently in the past few years have been releasing new music, but they’ll always be known for ”Frontier Psychiatrist”. The Avalanches are an electronic musical group from Australia, when I mean electronic I mean more like Kid Koala and not EDM. $39.50 is pretty steep for the show I feel, so it depends how much you really like them.
This is a solid line up for the price. Algiers is an experimental band, Actors is a rock band, and Sex with Strangers is one of the best polish sounding local bands in Vancouver. Contender for the Clubweight pick for sure.
Indie pop artist Sarah Jickling (Formerly part of The Oh Wells) is having her Album/Zine (Wait we still do those?) release at the Emerald. The sound is super polish, it’s upbeat but twisted lyrics which makes it a delight to listen to. Kind of like the Dresden Dolls before Amanda Palmer became… Amanda Palmer.
Separating this from the Actual Folk Festival part because this is a unique evening compared to the rest of the festival and it’s also free for everyone. Its musicians covering great Canadian songs in celebration of Canada 150. This is the type of Cover Bands I like, where it’s one or two covers with a great theme.
I’ve never heard about a Music Video release party, but sure. Metal Bands Galactic Pegasus and This Gun For Hire will be playing at the Biltmore. This Gun For Hire reminds me of early 2000’s hardcore/emo when that would get confused with each other. I don’t know what’s up with the weird ticket price either.
Rapper Denzel Curry is playing at Happy Ending Fridays at Fortune Sound Club. Denzel is one of the better rappers out there at the moment. XXL 2016 Freshman, and beside Anderson.Paak the best in that class.
Folk artists Wired to the Sky from Victoria and Jack the Bear will be playing at Hidden City Records. They’re a bit darker in lyrics than some of the other happy folk/country artists, which is something I like.
First of all huge shout-outs to The Ruffled Feathers for helping me find their event information because the Fox Cabaret doesn’t have it listed on their website. They also picked the song they want you to hear, and would like to say they have a new album on July 28th called Hand-Me-Down Centuries. They’re a chamber pop band, and the whole line-up is great. It does sound kind of countrish/folk/Americana, but I enjoy that side. It’s when you get into the god/truck country it gets annoying. $12 dollars is a steal, and a contender for Pubweight.
An awareness evening for Animal Rights with musical performances by The Furniture, The Shit Talkers, Daisy Stranglers, Sinead Sanders, Beaverette, and Siobhan Du Vall. There is also a vegan dinner for this, but $10 doesn’t include the dinner price. All of these are female fronted bands, expect some punk/rock type of sounds.
I’m not 100% sure if that’s the right Hey band, but I’m thinking it is in which case they’re a French band. Ben Harper is someone we know as a rock/blues artist throughout his career, he’s touring and coming to the Commodore Ballroom.
